| AIDS kills more people in Africa than war. At this moment, more than 25 million Africans are infected with HIV/AIDS. The major method of transmission is heterosexual sex. Unlike the rest of the world, more women than men in Africa are infected. There are millions of orphans who have lost parents to AIDS. Many of them are infected too. | But, there is some good news. For the first time since the epidemic started in Africa [late 1970s, early 80s,] there are signs that the number of new HIV infections may have stabilized. New infections dropped by more than one million to 3.8 million in 2000. The awareness campaigns and prevention messages seem to be working. But, what will it take to continue the trend? |
