LEO SARKISIAN’S "AFGHANISTAN:
1953-1956" PHOTOGRAPHS
Washington, D.C., March 11, 2002 -- Internationally known ethnomusicologist, musician, artist and longtime Voice of America music broadcaster Leo Sarkisian will exhibit his "Afghanistan: 1953-1956" photographs at VOA headquarters in Washington on March 12 and 13. The exhibit is made up of some 50 photographs of various sites in Afghanistan such as the Bhudda statue carved in the side of a mountain in the region of Bamiyan and destroyed last year by the Taliban. Multi-talented Leo Sarkisian is a renowned name in Africa. His weekly program, "Music Time in Africa," has been on the air for 35 years, making it one of VOA’s longest running and most popular shows. During his years of travel in Afghanistan, where he worked with Radio Kabul, he began a collection of photos to record some of the places he visited. Sarkisian’s "Afghanistan: 1953-1956" will open on Tuesday, March 12 at 10:00 a.m. Media representatives interested in attending the opening or visiting the exhibit should call VOA’s office of External Affairs at (202) 619-2538 or send email to pubaff@voa.gov.
