THREE AFRICAN FIRST LADIES DISCUSS AIDS ORPHANS IN AFRICA

Washington, D.C., May 24, 2001 -- Three African First Ladies will take part in a discussion of "AIDS Orphans in Africa" on VOA's Africa Journal today at 2:00 p.m.  Mrs. Jeannette Kagame, First Lady of Rwanda, will be live via satellite and Mrs. Theresa Kufuor, First Lady of Ghana, and Mrs. Patricia Muluzi, First Lady of Malawi, have both provided taped interviews. Clarence Hall, Director of HIV/AIDS Africare, and Emily Frye, AIDS Orphans Fund Raiser, will be in VOA's Washington studios.

Guests on today's program will discuss:

  • Who is caring for Africa's AIDS orphans?
  • Will the new global AIDS funds help put an end to the suffering?
  • And finally, what kind of future do Africa's AIDS orphans have?
Seventy percent of the 36-million people who suffer from HIV/AIDS are in Africa.  AIDS has left at least 11 million orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa and several African countries, and as many as half of today's 15-year-olds in Africa could die of the disease.

U.S. President George W. Bush, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, and Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, recently announced a new global trust fund to combat AIDS.  The United States has pledged $200 million and is asking other world governments, corporations, and private citizens to contribute.

Each week on Africa Journal, top newsmakers, experts, and interested viewers discuss the critical issues and events shaping Africa's political, economic, and social landscape.
