VOA Albanian Maintains Lead
Among International Broadcasters

Washington, D.C., Dec. 20, 2001 – In the face of an overall decline in international radio listening in Albania, Voice of America (VOA) leads other international stations, according to a recent InterMedia Global Audience and Market Research survey.  Of those responding to the survey, 20.1 percent listen to VOA at least once a week.  VOA is the only international broadcaster to draw a weekly audience above 10 percent.  VOA’s Albanian television broadcasts attract an even bigger audience, with 25 percent watching weekly.  In all, VOA now reaches 38 percent of Albanian adults on a weekly basis through radio, television, or both, with the highest listening rates in the north and in the capital Tirana.

VOA shows consistently high annual listening rates across all age groups.  Approximately one-third of Albanians in all age groups are occasional listeners to VOA, the largest being the 30-44 age group. VOA's annual audience comprises 54 percent men and 46 percent women.  Twenty-nine percent of VOA annual listeners hold university degrees.

Diary, a 30-minute news program, is VOA TV's most popular program in Albania with one-fourth of Albanian adults watching it at least once a week.  The program has built its own audience--independent of VOA radio listenership--and ranks eighth among all television stations available in the country.  Twenty percent of Albanians who never listen to international radio tune in at least once a week to VOA TV.  Most watch Diary on local television stations, primarily TV Klan and TV Shijak; 6 percent watch the program via satellite.

The Voice of America is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming every week to an audience of some 91 million worldwide.  Programs are produced and broadcast in English and 52 other languages
