VOA PROVIDES NON-STOP COVERAGE OF TERRORIST ATTACKS;
LISTENERS REACT TO UNFOLDING STORY

Washington, D.C., Sept. 12, 2001 – Even as most of the nation’s capital evacuated following Tuesday's terrorist attacks here and in New York, the Voice of America (VOA) broadcast non-stop news of the unfolding story via radio, television and the Internet in English and 52 other languages for its worldwide audience.

As the news broke, VOA dispatched correspondents to the World Trade Center, Pentagon, Capitol Hill, and the National Mall, and also moved to all-news formats in all 53 languages. VOA also expanded daily Arabic broadcasts from seven to nine hours. Farsi broadcasts went from three and a half to four and a half hours. VOA News Now, VOA's 24-hour news and information service, is providing 24-hour, English-language coverage.

Meanwhile, listeners from around the world have flooded VOA with calls and messages of concern and sympathy.  A man in China wrote, "I am a plain Chinese citizen. I deeply condemn the evil actions against American civilians.... Please accept my sincere sympathy to the victims. Let us pray for all the people who were killed in the tragedy." Members of a VOA Listener Club in Tajikistan said, "We all here in Tajikistan express our condolences. It touched our hearts."  Khieu Kanharith, Secretary of State in Cambodia's Ministry of Information, said, "Allow me to present my condolence to the American people for this cowardly attack." A man in Minas Gerais, Brazil wrote, "These huge attacks hit not only the Americans but all humankind that are claiming for peace all over the world."  From Ivory Coast, "I want to address my moral support to
all American people who lost some members of their family...."

Headquartered just three blocks south of the U.S. Capitol, the Voice of America is a multi-media international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. Using radio, television and the Internet, VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news and information programming a week to a worldwide audience of 91 million.
