VOICE OF AMERICA JOURNALISTS
WIN AWARD IN AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE’S DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA COMPETITION

Washington, D.C., April 26, 2001 -- Voice of America (VOA) video journalist Carolyn Weaver and editor David Shrensky were recognized for their extraordinary work in video journalism at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas this week.  Weaver and Shrensky are winners of the American Film Institute’s DVCAM FEST 2001 award, which was formally announced at the convention.  Sponsored by Sony Electronics and the American Film Institute, this competition recognizes the innovations of professionals using digital video technology.

Winners were selected from five categories: fiction, documentary, experimental, creative event coverage, and performance coverage. VOA’s winning entry in the Creative Event Coverage category, "Poets on the Bus," captures a day in the life of young "slam” (performance) poets on tour during their appearance here in Washington last summer. The story, which was reported, shot, scripted and narrated by Carolyn Weaver and edited by David Shrensky, is an example of VOA’s cutting edge video style.  The award carries a prize of $5,000 in SONY professional equipment as well as a master case of SONY DVCAM videotapes.

Digital video cameras were introduced to VOA two years ago, making VOA one of the first large-scale news organizations to adopt this mode of coverage. VOA video journalists exclusively use mini-DV cameras to work independently while on assignment.  In addition,  sound and  images captured by video journalists are used to enhance VOA’s website and radio broadcasts.

The Voice of America is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming every week to an audience of some 91 million worldwide. Programs are produced and broadcast in English and 52 other languages.
