Washington, D.C., July 12, 2001 – Under the sponsorship of the Voice of America, six journalists from Bosnia are participating in a two-week workshop on the growing epidemic of trafficking women worldwide. The workshop, July 8 – 20, is funded by VOA’s International Media Training Center (IMTC), which is committed to the development of a free and independent media throughout the world. The training program emphasizes women’s issues, human rights, news analysis, and civic journalism. An overview of the slavery of women and children and international affairs will include a series of lectures and visits to The Washington Post, USA Today, and Newsday. In addition, participants will be in New York City from July 15 –18 and visit the following news organizations: The New York Times, CBS News, Reuters America, Inc., NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, and Newsweek. The International Media Training Center, established in 1985, has trained more than 7,000 media personnel, including broadcasters, print journalists, technicians, and executives from more than 140 countries. The Voice of America is a multimedia broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming every week to some 91 million worldwide.
