NOBEL PRIZE LAUREATE GAO XINGJIAN GIVES EXCLUSIVE TELEVISION INTERVIEW TO THE VOICE OF AMERICA

Washington, D.C., March 29, 2001: Gao Xingjian, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Literature, discusses the future of Chinese literature and Chinese writers in an exclusive television interview in Mandarin on the Voice of America (VOA) radio and television simulcast China Forum on Monday, April 2 at 9:00 a.m. EDT.

In a pre-taped interview with VOA’s China Forum, the Nobel laureate talks about the relationship between politics and literature, why he is unwilling to participate in the democracy movement, and the difference between himself and other Chinese dissidents.
In addition, Mr. Gao describes the inspiration for his two prize-winning novels, Soul Mountain and The Other Man’s Bible.

Along with Mr. Gao’s interview, the show will feature Chinese writers Cao Changqing and Beiling Jiang in studio discussing the Nobel winner’s literary achievements and offering a critique of Gao’s work.  VOA’s Mandarin radio and television audience will be invited to join a segment of the program via a toll free phone number.  The program will be live-streamed on the Internet and air at 9:00 p.m. local time throughout most of Asia.
