Washington, D.C., April 5, 2002 – VOA Director Robert Reilly inaugurated new facilities at the Kalayanpur sation of Bangladesh Betar yesterday in Dacca, Bangladesh. The station will broadcast VOA Bangla and English programs on 97.6 MHz FM. U.S. Ambassador Peters and Bangladesh Information Minister Taiqal Islam joined Reilly at the inauguration. The new FM affiliate will carry VOA Bangla programming from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. local time. VOA's English-language programs will include VOA News Now aired from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.; VOA News Now/Special English from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; and VOA News Now from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Listeners in Dacca and surrounding areas will now be able to hear VOA Bangla and English broadcasts with greater clarity than on shortwave. In coming years, VOA will install FM transmitters in Chittagong, Cox' Bazar, Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Rangpur and Barisal/Patuakhali stations of Bangladesh Betar to bring their country within FM signal range. Director Reilly also attended a polio seminar organized by VOA fan clubs in Dacca and visited Muktarkandi village, Narayanganj district for a program organized by local VOA listener clubs. VOA has been active in worldwide efforts to promote immunization against polio. VOA broadcasts one and half hours of Bangla-language programming a day.The Voice of America, which first went on the air on Feb. 24, 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts 1,000 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to a worldwide audience of 94 million. Programs are produced in English and 52 other languages.
