| Washington, D.C., June 30, 2000 -- For the first time in over 40 years,
Tibetans will be able to see their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, officiate
at a Monlam Chenmo, or Great Prayer Festival, via a Voice of America satellite
to Tibet on July 3.
As part of the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which this year
highlights Tibetan culture, the Dalai Lama will officiate at the centuries-old
ceremony on Sunday morning, July 2, on the National Mall in Washington.
VOA will videotape the event and beam it via AsiaSat to viewers in Tibet
on Monday afternoon, July 3. In addition, VOA's Tibetan-language radio
service will provide live coverage of the Dalai Lama's appearance on the
Mall during its regular broadcast on Sunday morning between 10 and 11 AM
EDT (10-11:00 PM in Tibet).
The Voice of America broadcasts news and information
in 52 languages to an estimated audience of 91 million listeners each week.
