VOA Statement on Radio Kontynent VOA Turkish Service Expands to One Hour Daily VOA Albanian Maintains Lead Among International Broadcasters Voice of America Hosts Worldwide Call-In Show with New York City |
Washington, D.C., Jan. 2, 2002 -- Responding to the current crisis, the Voice of America has again increased its broadcasts to Afghanistan. According to audience surveys, four out of five adult males in Afghanistan listen to VOA every week, and more than nine out of ten say that VOA's broadcasts are "relevant" to their interests. As a result of the increases over the past two weeks, VOA's broadcasts to Afghanistan now total three hours a day in Dari and Pashto. In addition, VOA has increased its broadcasting hours throughout the Middle East and Central Asia and now features 12 hours a day in Arabic, 6 hours in Farsi, one hour in Turkish, 2 1/2 hours in Urdu, and one hour in Uzbek. These broadcasts are carried both via shortwave and medium wave (AM) radio and live-streamed on the Internet at www.voanews.com. The Voice of America is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming every week to a worldwide audience of 91 million.
