WINS TOP HONOR AT THE 2000 AWARDS CEREMONY OF THE NEW YORK FESTIVALS |
| Washington, D.C., June 26, 2000 -- The Voice of America
recently captured the Grand Award, the top prize at the 2000 International
Awards Ceremony at The New York Festivals. The engraved silver bowl was
awarded for the program "The Century in Sound: An American's Perspective,"
which was broadcast as a special feature on VOA last New Year's Eve. Those
specifically honored at the ceremony include executive producer and writer
Adam Phillips, editor Nancy Smart, technical director Gary Spizler, and
intern Jon Tkach.
Producer Adam Phillips described "The Century In Sound: An American's Perspective," as "an audio montage of the noisiest 100 years in human history." The 38-minute production was an extremely complex one, incorporating over 230 overlapping elements. It tells the story of the 20th century in roughly chronological order entirely in sound, with no narration. Elements include historic speeches and recordings, popular songs, poetry, "real people," sportscasts, news reports, and bulletins. The 2000 Awards competition attracted some 1,300 radio programs, features from 37 countries. Entries were evaluated by panels of radio industry professionals at radio organizations throughout the country and overseas for immediacy, production values, quality of presentation, audio quality, communication ability, entertainment values, and service to the community. The two Grand Award winners were selected from among the Gold World Medalists by the New York Festivals' Board of distinguished judges and advisors during a three-month sequence of judging sessions. "The Century In Sound: An American's Perspective" is available in Real Audio on the VOA Web Page. A complete list of sound elements, dates, and credits may also be found there. The BBC World Service also plans to broadcast the program on its "World in Your Ear" show, which features the best of world radio programming.
The Voice of America broadcasts news and information in 53 languages to an estimated audience of 91 million listeners each week. Contact: Lesley Jackson
