| Washington, D.C., July 3, 2000 -- Pete Peterson, U.S. Ambassador to
Hanoi, has invited Voice of America Music Director Judy Massa to host the
4th of July concert in Hanoi, Vietnam. The concert, which is a celebration
of Independence Day and the 5th anniversary of the re-establishment of
diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Vietnam, will also be attended
by VOA Director Sanford Ungar.
Massa will spend three weeks traveling throughout the region with American
singer/songwriter Rick Monroe and his band, who were recent guests on Massa's
call-in music show Border Crossings. In addition to his performance
on July 4th in Hanoi, Monroe, a noted Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter,
and his band, will perform at various locations throughout Hanoi and Ho
Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
Massa will provide reports on her activities in Vietnam during her Border
Crossings show, which is aired on VOA Monday through Friday, 1900 -
2000 UTC (3:00 p.m. EDT). Upon her return to Washington, she will produce
a special program featuring music from the various events and comments
by participants and audiences.
This is Massa's second trip to Hanoi. Her first musical tour of Hanoi,
in 1996, featured music artist Dan Seals and his band.
VOA Director Ungar will visit
Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Phen (Cambodia) and Islamabad (Pakistan), before
returning to Washington later this month.
