Washington, D.C., June 25, 2001 – In order to enhance coverage of South Asian news and emphasize audience-oriented themes through interactive programs, the Voice of America’s (VOA) Hindi Service will shift its broadcast schedule on July 1. As part of the shift, a new weekly live call-in program will be inaugurated in July with hosts Ashok Sarin and Rashmi Shukla and expert guests taking listener calls and e-mail questions. VOA Hindi programs will now provide more complete coverage of breaking news in South Asia along with reports on the vibrant South Asian communities in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world. These informative programs will engage audience members in discussions of news, music, culture, science and youth-oriented subjects. Commenting on the change, VOA Hindi Service director Jagdish Sarin said, “We look forward to greater interaction with our audience on subjects important to their daily lives.” The VOA Hindi show will now be broadcast daily at 1630-1700 UTC (10-10:30 p.m. local time) and 1730-1800 UTC (11-11:30 p.m. local time). The live call-in program will air in the early evening time slot on Tuesdays from 1630-1700 UTC (10-10:30 p.m. local time). The morning program from 0030-0100 UTC (6-6:30 a.m. local time) will remain the same. The broadcasts will be carried on shortwave radio and picked up by affiliate FM stations in Toronto, Vancouver, Mauritius, Suriname, and Fiji; and segments of VOA Hindi broadcasts will continue to be carried by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) and Radio Australia.
