VOA TO BROADCAST ROUND THE CLOCK
VIA FM IN THE IVORY COAST

Washington, D.C., Aug. 20, 2001 -- The Voice of America (VOA) has just signed an agreement with the government of the Ivory Coast for a 24-hour FM frequency in the country’s capital of Abidjan.  Listeners in Abidjan long used to relying on shortwave will soon be able to tune in to local radio station 99.0 FM to hear VOA programs in French and English, around-the-clock, seven days a week.

The establishment of the 24-hour frequency in the Ivory Coast is the latest in a series of recent initiatives designed to make VOA news and information programming more accessible to listeners in sub-Saharan Africa.  In June, VOA launched seven-day-a-week, round-the-clock broadcasts in English and Swahili via FM station 107.5 in Nairobi, Kenya.  Other African capitals slated for launches of VOA via FM frequencies include Kigali, Rwanda; Bujumbura, Burundi; Brazzaville, Congo; and Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The Voice of America is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming every week to a worldwide audience of 91 million.  Programs are produced and broadcast in English and 52 other languages.
