Links to VOA's New Korean-Language Internet Page Washington, D.C., March 4, 2002 — Starting today, Chosun Ilbo is placing a link on its Internet site, Digital Chosun, that will take Korean Internet surfers to VOA's new Korean-language Internet site (www.voakorea.com). Chosun Ilbo is one of the oldest and largest daily newspapers in South Korea. VOA and Chosun Ilbo’s Digital Chosun, signed a memorandum of understanding establishing the new affiliate relationship on the Internet. Simultaneously with the new link on Digital Chosun, VOA's Korean Service launches a new Korean-language Internet site today that will be updated twice a day with world, U.S., and region news—both in text and RealAudio. The service is archiving the audio of its morning and evening programs for 30 days, giving Internet surfers time to listen to the programs at their leisure. The link on Digital Chosun will significantly expand VOA's access to Korean Internet users. According to a survey conducted in February 2001 by Best Site in association with the Gallup Organization of Korea, 65 percent of all South Korean households now have access to the Internet. The Korean Service broadcasts a 30-minute breakfast show and a one-hour evening program over short- and medium-wave as well as live on the Internet via RealAudio. The programs are heard in North and South Korea from 6:30 to 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 to 11:00 p.m., local time. The Voice of America is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA provides more than 1,000 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming on radio, TV, and the Internet every week to an audience of 94 million people worldwide. Programs are produced and broadcast in English and 52 other languages. For additional
