MACEDONIAN LANGUAGE PROGRAMMING TO THE BALKANS Washington, D.C., Apr. 9, 2001 -- In response to the ongoing crisis in the Balkans, the Voice of America (VOA) will expand its Macedonian language programming to provide a multi-media source of comprehensive, accurate and objective news and information to listeners, viewers, and Internet users in the region. The expansion will bring an additional 45 minutes of in-depth regional and world news, news analyses, stringer and correspondent reports to VOA's audience in the region. The expansion will include two additional weekday evening broadcasts. Beginning April 9, 2001, a 15-minute news segment will air at 1815-1830 UTC (7:15-7:30 pm local time), and expanded by an additional 30-minutes of news, news-related material, and other original programming at 1930-2000 (8:30-9:00 pm local time) beginning April 23, 2001. Current Macedonian language programming consists of a 15-minute live program which airs weekdays at 1500-1515 UTC (4:00 - 4:15 pm local time). Macedonian language programming is made available weekdays to radio and television affiliates in Macedonia, Internet users, and E-mail subscribers. Apart from its own programming, upon request the Service prepares special reports, features, and interviews for radio and TV stations in Macedonia and other countries. The Voice of America is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming every week to an audience of some 91 million worldwide.
