MACEDONIAN BROADCASTERS AT UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI FOR TELEVISION WORKSHOP
Washington, D.C., June 15, 2001 – The Voice of America (VOA) will sponsor a two-week workshop, June 18–29, for six Albanian speaking Macedonian broadcasters at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The workshop is organized by the university’s School of Journalism, NBC affiliate KOMU-TV, and the VOA’s International Media Training Center, which is committed to the development of a free and independent media throughout the world.

Under the leadership of KOMU-TV Managing Editor Bill Silcock, News Director Stacey Woelfel and UM Broadcast News Department professor Kent Collins, participants will receive individual guidance on interviewing, taping, and editing. Participants will learn to maintain a professional appearance on-camera through instruction on personal presentation. Commenting on the information the participants will gain from the program, Silcock said, “We want to help them realize that television news is facts behind the story. We want them to understand the delicate balance between the show-biz aspects and journalism aspects of broadcasting.”

The Voice of America is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming every week to an audience of some 91 million worldwide. Programs are produced and broadcast in English and 52 other languages.
