Washington, D.C., March 28, 2001 - Starting tomorrow, in its first 24-hour broadcast in Asia, the Voice of America will begin beaming programming into Mongolia around the clock. VOA broadcasts, available 7 days a week on FM station 106.6 in the country's capital city of Ulaanbataar, will consist of VOA News Now, Special English, and Music Mix. Using a one-kilowatt transmitter, VOA will reach Mongolians in the capital region and outlying areas, home to nearly one third of the country's population. Listeners will hear news, information, educational, and cultural programs, including VOA News Now, the Voice of America's 24-hour news wire carrying U.S. and world news; Special English, which uses a 1,500 word vocabulary and a slow rate of speech to provide news and information for people who are not native English speakers; and Music Mix, VOA's 24-hour service that features a diverse collection of popular American music. Voice of America Director Sandy Ungar called the launch of the 24-hour broadcast in Mongolia a "major breakthrough into a critical although isolated area of the world." He added, "We look forward to being able to provide reliable news and information of the U.S. and the world to English-speaking Mongolians via the strong and accessible frequency of FM 106.6 in Ulaanbataar." VOA worked with the Standard M Company to establish this 24-hour frequency in Mongolia. In addition to its new 24-hour FM frequency, VOA has been a longtime affiliate of Mongolian Radio and Television, which has for several years translated VOA English programs and rebroadcast them nationwide. The Voice of America is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming every week to an audience of some 100 million worldwide. Programs are produced and broadcast in English and 52 other languages. For additional information, please contact the Office of External Affairs at (202) 619-2538.
