Named Communications Coordinator of the Broadcasting Board of Governors Washington, D.C., Jan. 17, 2002 -- Joan Mower has been named Communications Coordinator of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), effective Jan. 7, 2002. The BBG supervises the broadcasting activities of the Voice of America (VOA), Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB), and its grantees, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and Radio Free Asia (RFA). As Communications Coordinator, Ms. Mower is the Board’s chief advisor and primary representative in all areas of external relations, including media relations and external constituent relations. She will work with the broadcasting entities to promote, enhance and reinforce U.S. international broadcasting. Ms. Mower most recently served as International Program Director of The Freedom Forum, an Arlington, VA-based nonprofit foundation that sought to promote press freedom around the world. From 1991-1993, she was a Foreign Service Officer at the Department of State. As a reporter and editor in The Associated Press’s Washington, D.C., 1981-1991, Ms. Mower specialized in covering foreign affairs. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Ms. Mower holds a Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. She is married and has one daughter. For additional
