VOA GOES TO NEW MEXICO
BROADCASTING LIVE FROM ALBUQUERQUE

Albuquerque, April 18, 2001  - - The Voice of America (VOA), an international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government and headquartered in Washington, D.C., has assigned a six-member team to report to the world on life in New Mexico.  The team will be based at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque where they will broadcast live reports to VOA from Monday, April 23 to Friday, April 27.  This week reporters will fan out across the state to collect stories and conduct interviews for special features on the people, institutions, and events in New Mexico.

VOA’s team will interview Governor Gary Johnson and visit the White Sands Missile Range, the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Institute of American Indian Culture and Arts Development, and La Companie de Teatro, a Hispanic theatre in Albuquerque.  VOA’s listeners will venture to the Gathering of Nations, a meeting of some 3,000 representatives of more than 700 tribes from the U.S., Canada and around the world.  Listeners will also enjoy a visit to Santa Fe, including an introduction to local craft artisans.  VOA will interview students on campus life and local issues from their base at the University of New Mexico.  VOA will also report on other topics including water conservation, immigration, and drug enforcement.

VOA broadcasts over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming every week to an audience of some 91 million worldwide.  Radio, television, and Internet programs are produced and broadcast in 53 languages. 

The coverage of New Mexico will be broadcast live in English on VOA’s 24-hour all-news program News Now, and will be made available for translation into VOA’s 52 other broadcast languages.
