VOANEWS.COM DEBUTS ON THE INTERNET

Washington, D.C., Oct. 31, 2000:  Starting tomorrow and drawing on its worldwide news-gathering resources and nearly 60 years of journalistic excellence, the Voice of America will launch VOANEWS.COM, a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week Internet news service.

Along with the top international news stories, the VOANEWS.COM homepage includes regional news in Africa, the Americas, the Asian/Pacific region, Europe, the Mideast, South and Central Asia, and the United States.  The section "From Our Correspondents" features the latest correspondent reports from VOA's international bureaus.  Other headings include Business, Arts and Culture, Science and Technology, and Sports.

VOA news programs are streamed live and available through downloadable audio files. Video from VOA's television video journalists will be added in the near future.

Teams  of VOA journalists will update the site around the clock under the direction of VOA's news director and former VOA correspondent in Moscow, London, and Geneva, Andre De Nesnara, and managing editor Jerry McKinney.

VOANEWS.COM debuts in English but Chinese, Russian and several European languages, including Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Polish, Serbian, and Slovene will be added in the near future.

VOANEWS.COM was designed for an international audience.  The site has been kept graphically simple because many computers outside the United States still use the slower 14.4K modems, and in many regions, the per minute cost of Internet access is expensive.

Price Waterhouse Coopers developed the Web page design in conjunction with the VOA newsroom Web desk.

The Voice of America broadcasts over 900 hours of news and information each week to an estimated worldwide audience of 91 million regular listeners. Broadcasting in 53 languages, VOA reaches its audience over radio, television and the Internet. The Voice of America first went on the air February 24, 1942
