WORLDNET TELEVISION PROGRAM COMMEMORATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KOREAN WAR

Washington, D.C., June 20, 2000—This week’s edition of  WORLDNET Television’s internationally broadcast On The Line program commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Korean War. In addition to WORLDNET’s satellite television transmission of On the Line, the Voice of America’s Korean Service will broadcast a Korean-language radio version of the program on Sunday, June 25, exactly fifty years after the start of the conflict on the same date in 1950.

Guests on the twenty minute program include former New York Congressman Stephen Solarz; retired General William Odom, the director of national security studies at the Hudson Institute and former director of the National Security Agency; and Nicholas Eberstadt, a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the author of the recent book, The End of North Korea.

The guests gave a detailed analysis of the role of the Korean War in the broader context of the Cold War. They also appraised the prospects for change in North Korea in light of the recent Pyongyang summit.

Reflecting on Americans’ perception of the meaning of the Korean War a half century after it began, former Congressman Solarz observed, “Most Americans do not have the dimmest sense of how important a struggle and a sacrifice this was.  It may well be we owe our freedom today to the heroism of those Americans who responded to the call of duty in this conflict.”

On the Line is broadcast worldwide (except in the U.S.) by WORLDNET TV.  WORLDNET is the satellite television source of the International Broadcasting Bureau, which also encompasses the Voice of America and Radio and TV Marti broadcasts to Cuba. A transcript of the program is available on the Voice of America’s web site.
