PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF MERIT TO VOICE OF AMERICA POLISH SERVICE STAFFERS Washington, D.C., April 6, 2001 -- In a ceremony held at the Polish Embassy this week, the Polish Foreign Minister, Mr. Wladyslaw Bartoszewski, awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit to the present and former staffers of the Voice of America's Polish Service. In his remarks, Minister Bartoszewski praised the contribution of the Voice of America's Polish Service to the democratic spirit maintained in Poland during the decades of communism: "You have provided hundreds of thousands of Poles with access to credible, straightforward information about events in the Unites States and in Poland. While commenting on the issues of the contemporary world, you helped to create the image of modern Poland, which cherishes its traditions of friendship and cooperation with the United States. I am deeply grateful to you both as an‘old Pole' and as a member of the government of the Polish Republic." Minister Bartoszewski, known to be a hero of the Polish underground and distinguished as a savior of many Jews during World War II, visited Washington to talk to U.S. officials, and to meet with representatives of the American-Jewish community. "This recognition of VOA's Polish Service by the Government of Poland is a wonderful testimony to the many men and women who have made up the Service over the years since 1942, and who contributed to the freedom that Poland now enjoys," said VOA Program Director Myrna Whitworth. VOA's Polish Service is part of VOA's newly established European Multimedia Unit. Polish language programming is made available weekdays to radio and television affiliates in Poland, Internet users, and E-mail subscribers. Programming includes news and background reports from VOA correspondents throughout the world, breaking stories, profiles of news makers, news analyses, and commentaries. Apart from its own programming, upon request the Polish Service prepares special reports, features, and interviews for Polish language radio and TV stations in Poland and other countries. The Voice of America is a multimedia international
broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government. VOA broadcasts
over 900 hours of news, informational, educational, and cultural programming
every week to an audience of some 91 million worldwide. Programs
are produced and broadcast in English and 52 other languages.
