to Perform in VOA's Noontime Concert Series
Ms. Rojas will present solo works by Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Rodrigo, Manuel Ponce, along with a duo by Astor Piazzolla with the Uruguayan guitarist Magdalena Duhagon. The live performanceis free and open to the public. Praised by The Washington Post as a "guitarist extraordinaire," Berta Rojas has performed in such venues as the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress, the South Bank Center in London, and the Ravello Festival in Italy. She has released two CDs for Dorian Recordings: "Concierto Latinoamericano" and "Intimate Barrios." In 1996, the Kennedy Center selected Ms. Rojas as a Kennedy Center Fellow of the Americas in recognition of artistic excellence for the performing arts. This fellowship along with another granted by the Organization of American States in 1997 allowed Ms. Rojas to undertake post-graduate studies at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland. At Peabody, Ms. Rojas earned a Masters Degree in music with honors and a Graduate Performance Diploma. The Noontime Concert Series is part of VOA’s observance of its 60th anniversary this year. Future performances will include the pianist Stephen Drury on May 8; the American Boychoir on May 22; the Jacques Thibaud String Trio on June 12; the Potomac String Quartet on June 26; and the St. Petersburg Quartet on July 24. Performances begin at 12:00 noon at VOA headquarters in the Wilbur J. Cohen Building at 330 Independence Ave., SW.
