Opposition Leader Kostunica
Live in Midst of Civil Uprising
|
Washington, D.C., Oct. 5, 2000: Broadcasting live from its studios in Washington, D.C., the Voice of America (VOA) interviewed Serbian opposition leader Kostunica in today’s afternoon radio broadcast with the Milosevic regime hanging in the balance in the wake of public demonstrations. Kostunica spoke in Serbian to VOA listeners. A paraphrased translation of Kostunica’s statement follows:
“A new democratic government is in the process of being formed in Belgrade and on the federal level. Our [Kostunica’s] people have established contact with all relevant state structures, including the police. The will of the people has prevailed. Milosevic has not learned that elections are there to be won and to be lost.”
A local VOA affiliate in Serbia has recently come back on line and is carrying VOA’s half hour radio/television/Internet simulcast show which airs five days a week. The Voice of America reaches its listeners in Serbia and throughout the Balkans in their native languages via radio (shortwave, AM and FM), Internet and satellite transmission.
