SUDAN AT THE CROSSROADS A SYMPOSIUM PRESENTED BY THE VOICE OF AMERICA Sudan Symposium Web Site: Washington, D.C., May 14, 2001 - On Tuesday, May 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (EDT) the Voice of America will host a symposium entitled, "Sudan at the Crossroads: Issues in a Civil War and Perspectives on Sustainable Peace," at VOA headquarters (330 Independence Avenue, SW, C Street entrance). This symposium will offer a noteworthy opportunity to hear about both sides of the conflict in Sudan from key players on the ground, academics and political leaders. VOA Director Sanford Ungar and Africa Division Director Gwen Dillard will provide a brief introduction and welcome guests. Maimouna Mills, VOA journalist and host of VOA's Africa Journal program, will serve as moderator. The Honorable Donald M. Payne, (D-NJ), U.S. House of Representatives, is scheduled to speak on Sudan's search for internal stability. The first panel will focus on the origins of the civil war in Sudan, cultural and religious identity, and regional equity in that country. The panelists will include: Ms. Jemera Rone, Sudan Researcher, Human Rights Watch; Mr. Mahdi Ibrahim Mohamd, Advisor to the President of Sudan (by telephone); Dr. John Garang, Chairman, Sudanese People's Liberation Army (by telephone); Mr. Steven Wondu, Representative, Sudanese People's Liberation Army; Mr. Farouk Abu-Eissa, Assistant President, National Democratic Alliance (by telephone); Dr. Ahmed El Bashir, Professor of African Studies, University of the District of Columbia. Dr. Francis Deng, Distinguished Professor, Political Science Program,
City University of New York, will open the second panel discussion about
perspectives on sustainable peace. The panelists will examine issues surrounding
national unity and regional autonomy, internal democratic reform, and an
