Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian Comments on U.S. Presidential Elections in an Exclusive Interview with VOA

Washington, D.C., October 19, 2000: In his first exclusive interview with an international broadcaster, Taiwan’s President Chen Shui-bian commented on the upcoming U.S. Presidential elections saying “we are deeply concerned with this American election, but we are also deeply convinced that the U.S. Government about to take office will make certain that U.S.-Taiwan relations are not damaged in any way.” The Voice of America’s (VOA’s) exclusive interview with President Chen Shui-bian was broadcast at 9:00 p.m. Beijing Time (9:00 a.m. EDT) on October 19th. According to independent audience measurement firms such as A. C. Nielsen, VOA’s audience in China numbers more than 10 million. They listen on shortwave or watch on satellite television up to 12 hours of original programming every day in Mandarin, an additional two hours of Cantonese, and four hours in Tibetan – for a total of 18 hours a day into China. Of the Mandarin radio broadcasts, one hour a day (except Fridays and Sundays) is simultaneously broadcast on television. Carried by the Asiasat satellite, these “simulcasts” are seen in China between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. VOA’s China Branch extends its reach by providing Chinese Internet users around the globe the same in-depth news coverage that they have come to expect from VOA’s traditional television and radio broadcasts.
