VOA Director Sanford Ungar to Testify to the
Africa Subcommittee of the House International Relations Committee

Washington, D.C., September 26, 2000 --  Sanford Ungar, the Director of the Voice of America, will testify on the role of the media in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa before the Africa Subcommittee of the House International Relations Committee on Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. (EDT).   The Subcommittee hearing, “HIV/AIDS in Africa: Steps to Prevention,” will be held in Room 2172 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

An estimated 23.3 million adults and children are living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa alone.  The Voice of America (VOA) has taken a special interest in the issue given that an estimated 40 percent of VOA listeners live in Africa.  VOA broadcasts into African homes in eleven languages every day (French, English, Arabic, Hausa, Swahili, Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, Amharic, Afan Oromo, Portuguese, and Tigrigna).  VOA broadcasts directly on both shortwave and AM radio and has a network of FM radio and television affiliate stations throughout Africa as well as live Internet program streaming.

Through frank presentation of information and explanation of methods of prevention and treatment, VOA programming on HIV/AIDS has aimed at helping its African listeners make sound and informed choices about dealing with the disease.   VOA Director Ungar’s testimony will focus on the critical role of radio often as the most effective means of reaching people and generating discussion of subjects long considered taboo. Director Ungar’s testimony as prepared for delivery is attached.

VOA broadcasts more than 900 hours a week in English and 52 other languages to some 91 million regular listeners.
