Marks One Year Nov. 1, 2001, Washington, D.C. – On Nov. 1, 2001 the Voice of America’s (VOA) online international news service, VOANEWS.COM, marks one year of providing reliable, balanced, and comprehensive multimedia news to a global audience. VOA provides its Internet audience with current news and features in 53 languages paired with more than 200 hours of audio and video programs streamed daily. Initiated as a pilot project on Nov. 1, 2000, VOANEWS.COM now serves as a vital source of U.S., international and regional news to a diverse international audience. Drawing on a network of 16 news bureaus internationally and 800 journalists VOANEWS.COM provides both breaking news and background reports and features around the clock. Twenty-four VOA language and program services now provide updated news texts along with audio streaming. Examples include Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian, and Russian. Web features include radio-TV-Internet simulcast programs such as VOA’s News Review a roundtable discussion with journalists covering the latest events, This Week with more in-depth reports on the week’s top news stories in a magazine-style format, and Our World that examines a broad range of current issues in science, technology, agriculture, and the natural environment. The web site also highlights VOA’s Special English which includes an online version of a dictionary of about 1,500 basic words used in VOA’s immensely popular programs in slow-speed found in the VOA Special English Word Book. These programs help millions of people around the globe become familiar with American English as they learn about world news, American society, and developments in health, science and technology.
